This 1981 photograph shows Bistro 5 on Jubbergate in York, close to The Shambles, occupying a striking black-and-white timber-framed building with leaded windows, a projecting upper bay and a steep red-tiled roof. The restaurant name is painted prominently across the frontage, while boards outside advertise “OPEN FOR PIZZAS PASTAS BURGERS STEAKS” and a restaurant and coffee house, with another chalkboard listing dishes such as coffee, Yorkshire pudding, sweet & sour and lasagne. The scene is animated by groups of pedestrians crossing in front of the building, a bicycle leaning nearby, and a red saloon car edging into view on the right. It is a strong record of this corner of old York in the early 1980s, before later changes in use, and the building is now occupied by Gert and Henry’s restaurant.
