This 1988 photograph captures a Birketts mobile baker van making a doorstep delivery in Glenridding, a lovely everyday scene from the Lake District before supermarket shopping fully displaced this kind of village service. The back doors of the red van are open to reveal shelves stocked with bread and other bakery goods, while the painted lettering reads “Birketts Quality Products from Bakery to Doorstep”. The registration A692 CHH is clearly visible above the rear opening, and inside the van a handwritten notice hangs from the roof while crates, loaves and groceries are stacked ready for delivery. In the foreground an elderly woman stands at the rear step with a shopping bag from Joan’s Fashion Fabrics of Carlisle, adding another small period detail to this quiet Cumbrian street scene beneath the fells.
