A richly evocative glimpse inside Big Biba in 1974, the legendary emporium that transformed the former Derry & Toms department store into a fantasy world of fashion, glamour and theatrical retail design. Opened in 1973, Big Biba was the creation of Barbara Hulanicki, who envisioned a “shopping theme park” where every floor offered a different immersive experience—from fashion and cosmetics to homewares, food halls and eccentric curiosities.
This photograph captures the Homewares and Bazaar section, filled with exotic displays, mirrored surfaces and dramatic lighting that made even everyday items feel like treasures from a film set. Shoppers in flared trousers and platform shoes browse among feathered fans, wicker baskets, animal-print furnishings and ornate decorative pieces—hallmarks of Biba’s eclectic and maximalist aesthetic.
