A lively Saturday morning scene at Bermondsey Market, long famed for its antiques, bric-a-brac and second-hand curios. By 1972 the market still drew dealers from across London, arriving before dawn to sift through house clearances, silverware, old tools and whatever treasures turned up on the stalls.
In the foreground a Metropolitan Police officer sits astride a Triumph Saint motorcycle, the standard police “stop-and-intercept” machine of the era, complete with white fairing and leg shields. Parked behind him is a rare sight on a London street: a white Jensen Interceptor, one of Britain’s most luxurious hand-built GT cars of the period.
Bermondsey Market would change dramatically in the decades that followed, but in this photograph it still retains the atmosphere of its post-war heyday: crowded stalls, bundled coats, early-morning bargaining and the unmistakable bustle of old SE1.
