This 1985 photograph shows the rear three-quarter view of 1938 Bentley 4¼ Litre FXW 6 outside Goudhurst Service Station on Station Road in Goudhurst, Kent. The dark blue Derby Bentley’s flowing fastback body, spatted rear wheels, twin oval rear windows and wire wheels give it a particularly elegant late-1930s profile, while the red Ford Sierra estate in the background provides a nice contrast between pre-war coachbuilt luxury and everyday 1980s family motoring. The village garage setting suits the Bentley well, and with the service station now demolished and the site redeveloped for housing, the image also preserves a vanished piece of roadside Goudhurst. More than just a study of FXW 6, it is a useful record of how a distinguished pre-war Bentley could still appear entirely at home in an ordinary English village forecourt nearly half a century later.
