Intended as one of the Fair’s most ambitious cultural showcases, the four-acre Belgian Village recreated the atmosphere of an old European town with remarkable detail. More than 100 buildings filled the space — including a church, city hall, winding narrow streets, shops, and a sprawling 1,500-seat rathskeller. More than 20 food stalls and restaurants served regional specialties, and it was here that Belgian waffles — topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream — became one of the legendary food hits of the Fair.
Despite its scale and popularity, the project faced delays and financial complications. The village didn’t open until two-thirds of the way through the Fair’s first season, leaving many structures unfinished, and several storefronts never opened at all.
Just 14 months after its official debut, the Belgian Village met the same fate as most of the World’s Fair: dismantled, cleared away, and lost to time. Today, photographs and memories are all that remain of this elaborate attempt to transport visitors from Queens to old-world Europe.
