This 1972 view looks east along Bear Street towards the grand façade of Cecil Court Mansions, one of the surviving remnants of the Victorian redevelopment of the area around Leicester Square. At this time Bear Street was still a narrow cut-through lined with small cafés, pubs and specialist shops serving both office workers and the steady flow of cinema-goers heading towards Charing Cross Road and the West End.
On the left stands the Bear & Staff, a long-established pub whose street-corner presence has remained a fixture of Leicester Square since the 19th century (the building seen here would later be rebuilt in the 1990s). On the right is one of the numerous small restaurants and eateries that characterised the district before the large chains arrived — its rounded arcade frontage and illuminated signage very typical of early-1970s West End styling.
