When the Bear Mountain Bridge opened in 1924, it briefly held the title of the longest suspension bridge in the world, a record it retained for less than two years before being surpassed by larger crossings elsewhere. Despite the short-lived distinction, the bridge remains a significant early example of long-span suspension bridge engineering and a prominent landmark of the Hudson Highlands.
