This 1984 view captures two of the City’s best-known landmarks side by side: the long classical frontage of the Bank of England on the left and the great portico of the Royal Exchange on the right. The scene is full of useful period detail, with extensive roadworks and barriers in front of the Exchange, red London buses rounding the junction, yellow box markings spread across the carriageway, and a mix of early-1980s cars threading through the Bank intersection. Behind the older stone architecture rise the harder-edged office towers of the modern City, creating a sharp contrast between Victorian grandeur, twentieth-century commercial rebuilding and the everyday traffic of the Square Mile. It is a strong record of the area before later streetscape changes, when this famous corner of the City still had a notably heavier and more workaday feel.
