A 1970s colour photo of Baker Street in London during the latter half of the 20th century, looking north towards Marylebone Road. On the left stands the grand facade of Chiltern Court, an imposing Edwardian mansion block built between 1927 and 1929 above Baker Street station, which has famously been home to residents such as H.G. Wells and Arnold Bennett. The street scene in 1972 is busy with classic vehicles, including several red London Transport double-decker buses, a “British Relay TV” service van, and an Austin 1100. The pavement on the right features traditional black barrels used as planters outside a local establishment, while a classic red pillar box stands prominently at the kerb. This historic thoroughfare, synonymous with Sherlock Holmes, is captured here during a period when it operated with one-way traffic, a layout that has since been returned to two-way operation.
