Badwater Basin, Death Valley California 1972

This photograph captures Badwater Basin long before it became the heavily visited landmark it is today. The small pool—fed by springs rising through ancient salt deposits—is one of the few visible patches of water in a place famous for the absence of it. The minerals dissolved in the basin make the water undrinkable, giving the area its stark and suitably dramatic name: Badwater.

The wooden sign marks the location as the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere, at 282 feet below sea level. In the background, high on the mountainside, a white mark labeled “Sea Level” reminds visitors just how far below the rest of the world they stand. Today this marker still exists, though modern signage and railings have replaced the simpler setup seen here.

In this 1972 view, the salt flats stretch out untouched and endless—no raised boardwalk, no crowds, just open desert and a sense of scale that’s difficult to appreciate anywhere else. The lone visitor walking a small dog adds a human touch, highlighting just how vast and silent the landscape truly is.
