A quiet moment along Foothill Boulevard in Azusa captures a classic slice of roadside Americana during the era when U.S. Route 66 was still an active highway. At right stands one of Southern California’s early McDonald’s restaurants, complete with the iconic Speedee mascot. The pole beside it displays a Route 66 highway marker, confirming this stretch of Foothill Boulevard as part of the legendary Mother Road.
Like many early McDonald’s sites, this building and its neon sign were later demolished during modernization in the late 20th century. Today, the roadway still exists, but only as a designated Historic Route 66 segment — and nothing remains of the original restaurant. Views like this survive as rare reminders of the golden age of car culture, drive-ins, and classic roadside architecture in Southern California.
