The 10 1/4″ gauge Ayr Miniature Railway opened in 1968 and closed in 2006. The track formed a 360 yard loop on the seafront between the Esplanade and the Cromwell Rd car park – the area is now covered by new flats. For its entire life the railway was operated by just one locomotive (‘Ayr Princess’) and two carriages, all built new for the line by Severn Lamb in 1968. The loco and carriages still survive today at Craigiemains Home and Garden Centre in Ballantrae.
