Visitors to the Fair could enjoy a leisurely loop behind the wheel of these charming 5/8-scale antique automobiles, built by Arrow Development, a company that would later become legendary for its roller coasters and Disney ride systems. Powered by small single-cylinder gas engines and guided along a track with a centre rail, the ride offered guests the thrill of “driving” without the risk — perfect for families and children eager for a taste of early motoring.
The styling evoked the brass-era automobiles of the 1900s, complete with lamps, curved fenders, and upright seating. The steady chug of the engines, mixed with the Fair’s music, PA announcements, and crowds, made this a memorable sensory experience for many who visited.
During the 1960s and 70s, Arrow built over 50 similar rides for parks around the world, making the design one of the company’s most widespread and enduring attractions. After the World’s Fair closed in 1965, this particular installation found a second life: in 1978 it was relocated to Adventureland on Long Island, where the original cars continued carrying riders until 1995 — more than 30 years after their debut.
Nowadays the Aviary of the Queens Zoo stands in this general area.
