This authentic colour photograph, captured in the 1950s, documents a Black 5 steam locomotive, number 44998, at Aviemore Junction in the Scottish Highlands. The archival image shows the locomotive, emblazoned with the early British Railways “unicycling lion” totem, hauling a train past the station platform. The station sign for Aviemore Junction is clearly visible in the foreground, along with a long train of freight wagons. The background is dominated by the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Cairngorm Mountains. Traditional stone-built railway cottages and telegraph poles line the tracks, completing a scene that epitomises the golden age of Scottish steam. This factual record is an essential piece of social and industrial history from the Inverness–Perth line. All our images are available as royalty-free instant downloads for use in books, media, and creative projects – or make your own prints for home, work, or as a truly unique gift.
