This 1960s view shows an Austin A40 Farina stopped on a rough village track, with the driver leaning out of the window and smiling towards the camera. The car’s broad horizontal grille, compact saloon body, chrome overriders and single round headlamps make it a good clear study of one of Britain’s most familiar small cars of the period. Behind it, the scene includes a handwritten “NO PARKING FOOTPATH” sign, mature trees, a curving unmade lane and a mixture of older rural buildings, including a house to the left and a corrugated-roof structure to the right. More than a simple car portrait, the photograph captures the Austin in an everyday countryside setting, the kind of informal rural scene in which these practical little saloons were once a completely ordinary sight.
