This 1979 view shows an Austin 1300, registration GTC 159K, parked in the driveway of a neatly kept suburban semi-detached house, with an older couple standing by the front path and rose beds in bloom along the low brick wall. The K suffix dates the car to 1971–72, making it around seven or eight years old when photographed here, still serving as an ordinary family car in a very typical late-1970s residential setting. Seen from the rear, the Austin’s upright shape, slim pillars, simple hubcaps and tall vertical tail lamps mark it out as one of the many BMC and British Leyland small saloons that once filled British streets. More than a straightforward car study, the picture works as a quiet record of everyday suburban life, with the car, the house frontage, the garden and the owners all contributing to a scene that would once have seemed entirely unremarkable.
