Aurora 7 spacecraft – New York World’s Fair 1964

The Aurora 7 Mercury spacecraft, famously flown by astronaut Scott Carpenter on May 24, 1962, during NASA’s early manned spaceflight program. It became one of the most popular exhibits at the fair, especially among children who had grown up watching the Space Race unfold on television.

Aurora 7 completed three orbits around Earth, making Carpenter the second American to orbit the planet after John Glenn. The mission wasn’t without drama — fuel management issues led to an off-target splashdown nearly 250 miles from the intended recovery point — but Carpenter returned safely and the spacecraft became a symbol of both technological achievement and the learning curve of early space exploration.
