A 1970s colour photo of the popular open-air Sunday art market held along the railings of Green Park on Piccadilly during the latter half of the 20th century. The scene from 1972 shows a diverse array of artworks, including traditional landscapes and more provocative velvet paintings of nudes, displayed for passersby. A prominent “City of Westminster” street sign for Piccadilly W.1 is visible on the railings, directing visitors to house numbers 1-230. In the background, the lush greenery of the park and the boundary wall of the Buckingham Palace gardens provide a scenic backdrop to the bustling pavement gallery. This weekly event was a staple of London’s cultural life in the seventies, allowing local artists to sell their work directly to the public in one of the city’s most prestigious locations.
