A 1970s colour photo of the vibrant open-air art market held on the Sunday pavement of Piccadilly, bordering Green Park, during the latter half of the 20th century. The scene from 1972 shows a diverse crowd of visitors, including a couple in the foreground—the woman in a patterned mini-dress and the man in a pink shirt and blue trousers—browsing a vast collection of oil paintings hooked onto the tall blue iron railings of the park. Behind them, other strollers in period fashion, such as flared trousers and sleeveless sweaters draped over shoulders, pause to examine landscapes and city scenes. The market was a well-known local fixture where artists displayed everything from traditional vistas to contemporary subjects directly to the public. To the left, a large stone gate pier marks the edge of the park’s boundary, while the leafy trees of Green Park provide a lush backdrop to this busy London cultural scene in the early seventies.
