1960s photo of paintings displayed along the railings of Green Park beside Piccadilly, part of a long-standing summer tradition in which artists and dealers exhibited and sold affordable artwork to passing pedestrians. These open-air art sales became especially popular in the post-war decades, adding colour and informality to one of London’s grandest streets and attracting both tourists and office workers during the warmer months.
The tradition has survived, albeit in a more regulated form. Art displays still appear along the railings of Green Park and nearby parks today, particularly in summer, though numbers are more controlled and the scene is less informal than it was in the 1960s. This photograph captures the practice at its peak, when selling art directly on the railings was a familiar and accepted part of everyday London street life.
