A 1970s colour photo of the entrance to the Antique Hypermarket on Kensington High Street during the latter half of the 20th century. The building’s facade is decorated with large, classical caryatid statues and prominent signage advertising “Paintings” and “Porcelain,” while a yellow directional sign points visitors toward “Furniture Downstairs.” A long queue of people in typical early-seventies fashion—including a man in a purple patterned shirt and flared trousers and several women in brightly coloured woollen coats—wait at a London Transport bus stop for routes 9, 33, and 73. To the right, a mustard-yellow Ford Cortina with the registration DLY 655J is parked at the kerbside near a set of grand iron gates. This site, which once housed a vast collection of stalls for antique dealers and collectors, has since been significantly redeveloped and is currently occupied by a TK Maxx department store.
