An LMS 20-ton Flatrol wagon in 1961, photographed in a freight yard among tank wagons and ventilated vans. The low-slung wagon is shown in useful detail, with its timber-decked well, heavy riveted steel frame and the large cylindrical roller bed mounted across the centre, designed for carrying awkward heavy loads that needed to be moved or positioned with care. Behind it can be seen a line of silver tank wagons, including examples in Shell branding, while the rough yard surface, rusting rails and scattered weeds underline the hard-working industrial atmosphere. It is exactly the kind of specialised goods stock that rarely received much attention compared with locomotives, yet photographs like this are valuable records of the highly varied wagon types once found in everyday railway freight service.
