Ground crews carry out apron maintenance at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in 1961, in front of the original terminal complex known as Schiphol-Oost. The terrace-lined terminal building, with its prominent “Schiphol Amsterdam” signage, reflects the modest scale of the airport during the early jet age, before the construction of today’s much larger central terminal.
In the foreground, workers are patching the tarmac by hand, watched over by service vehicles including an early Mercedes-Benz Unimog utility truck fitted with a red-and-white airfield safety flag. A KLM airport bus passes nearby, illustrating the mix of pedestrian labour and mechanised ground operations typical of European airports in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Schiphol-Oost was gradually phased out as traffic grew, eventually replaced by the more efficient layouts that define the modern airport.
