The Amphicar was one of the more unusual attractions at the fair—a fully amphibious convertible built in West Germany and marketed to the public as a practical dual-purpose vehicle. Fair visitors could board the car at a ramp beside Meadow Lake and experience a short cruise before returning to dry land, demonstrating how the Amphicar transitioned seamlessly from road wheels to twin rear-mounted propellers. The official guidebook described it as “a regular sports convertible, but with a waterproof bottom and sides,” offering a glimpse of personal transportation with a nautical twist.
Despite its appealing novelty, the Amphicar earned a reputation for being mechanically demanding, requiring lubrication at no fewer than thirteen service points after water use—one of which could only be accessed by removing the rear seat. Though only a few thousand were ever produced, the Amphicar remains a beloved symbol of 1960s experimentation and the fair’s optimistic belief that technology could reshape the way people travelled—by land or by lake.
