This photograph shows the AMF Monorail gliding along its elevated guideway against a clear summer sky. Built by American Machine and Foundry—better known for manufacturing bowling equipment—the system was based on an imported French design and was the only monorail the company ever constructed. The train operated on a 4,000-foot loop encircling the fair’s amusement zone, and with only a single station, the monorail functioned more as an attraction than a transit system.
Although widely photographed and fondly remembered, the AMF Monorail was dismantled shortly after the fair ended, making surviving images like this one rare documentation of a short-lived experiment in American mass-transit design.
