Looking down Towers Street at Alton Towers in 1989 from the main entrance, with the flowerbeds, benches, lamps and shopfronts of the park’s principal approach laid out below. The central blue-fronted building with its turreted corner and bright windows gives the scene a distinctly late-1980s feel, while the formal landscaping and broad paved avenue show the resort’s shift towards a more polished modern theme park layout. To the left is the World Bazaar frontage, and beyond the buildings the open water and mature trees help remind us that Alton Towers still retained much of its landscaped estate character at this date. It is a strong view of the park entrance area just before the 1990s brought even bigger changes, capturing Towers Street at a moment when it still felt spacious, smart and relatively new.
