The Rapids Ride at Alton Towers in 1986, photographed in wintry conditions just a few weeks after the attraction had opened. The newly laid-out course, with its broad concrete channels, timber bridges, rocky banks and circular rafts, still looks raw and exposed against the frosty ground, making this an especially interesting early view of one of the park’s major new rides. Visitors can be seen walking around the perimeter while rafts are already circulating through the course, giving a sense of how quickly the ride had become part of the changing Alton Towers landscape. It is a strong record of the Rapids in their infancy, capturing the attraction before planting matured and before later development softened the stark, newly engineered setting.
