Alton Towers in 1989, with one of the park’s monorail trains crossing its elevated concrete guideway above the landscaped area beside the Rapids Ride. The monorail had opened only two years earlier, so this was still a relatively new feature of the park. The main entrance is just out of sight to the left, and the coach park is straight ahead. In the foreground are the rocky-edged water margins and service structures of the rapids ride area, while beyond the track the rolling Staffordshire countryside remains clearly visible, showing how much of Alton Towers’ rural setting could still be seen at this date. It is a strong record of the park in the late 1980s, when new transport systems like the monorail helped mark its rapid transformation into a major modern theme park.
