This 1982 view looks towards the Albert Memorial, its richly decorated Gothic canopy rising above the traffic and trees on the edge of Kensington Gardens. In the foreground, a red pillar box, a line of parked cars and a red double-decker bus give the scene a very everyday London character, while the silver Datsun Sunny helps firmly date the street setting to the early 1980s. The contrast is striking: one of Victorian London’s most elaborate monuments seen not in isolation, but as part of an ordinary streetscape of kerbs, railings, buses and passing traffic. It is a good record of how the Albert Memorial still dominated this corner of west London before later changes in traffic and street furniture softened some of the period feel.
