This authentic 1970s colour photograph, captured in 1972, documents the historic heart of Monmouth in Southeast Wales. The archival image features a view of Agincourt Square, dominated by the classic Bath stone facade of the Shire Hall, built in 1724. The building’s pedimented front and arched marketplace are clearly visible, along with the famous statue of King Henry V, who was born in Monmouth Castle. To the left, a row of traditional black-and-white buildings houses local businesses of the era, including Coles Knapp & Kennedy auctioneers and Alan Swain opticians. The Tudor-style timber-framed architecture of the Beaufort Arms Hotel can be seen in the background on the right. This factual record captures the Georgian elegance and everyday commercial life of this Welsh border town as it appeared in 1972.
