Description

The scene shows traffic on the A6 Preston–Lancaster road in the early 1960s, next to the intersection with Ratcliffe Wharf Lane. A Mothers Pride bread lorry waiting to pull out and a police patrol car, registration 827 NTC, heading north in the foreground. That car is an MGA 1600 roadster supplied new to Lancashire Constabulary as part of a batch of around 50 MGAs built to police specification, divided into white “A-Class” and black “B-Class” cars and used mainly by women officers on traffic patrol.

After service it passed into private hands, was restored back into full livery in the late 1990s (complete with front “POLICE” sign and loudhailer), and even featured in a Lledo/Vanguards diorama of a 1960s Lancashire police garage. Today 827 NTC is preserved on display at the Lakeland Motor Museum near Newby Bridge in Cumbria, where it still appears exactly as it would have looked when it patrolled this very stretch of road more than sixty years ago.
