A 1970s colour photo taken from a high vantage point looking east along the A40 Westway towards central London during the latter half of the 20th century. The elevated dual carriageway, which opened in 1970, cuts through the urban landscape of North Kensington and Paddington, carrying a steady stream of mid-seventies traffic including a yellow delivery van and several classic saloons. To the left, the vast rooftops of the Paddington maintenance depots are visible, while the right side is lined with mature trees and the residential blocks of the Edward Woods Estate in the distance. In the foreground, the dark brickwork of Victorian tenement buildings provides a sharp contrast to the modern concrete brutalism of the motorway and the rising skyline of the city beyond. This iconic piece of infrastructure remains one of the most significant examples of postwar urban planning in Britain, representing the 1970s vision of a “motor city.”
