This 1964 view shows the A34 Western Bypass at Godstow Road, Oxford, cutting across open countryside with light traffic moving along the broad new dual carriageway. The scene has a distinctly early-bypass look, with post-and-rail fencing in the foreground, wide grassy verges, black-and-white roadside bollards and a low bridge carrying the road over a drainage channel or minor watercourse. Visible traffic includes a covered lorry on the far carriageway, a dark saloon in the centre and smaller vehicles further off along the sweeping curve, while the flat meadows, hedgerows and scattered trees give the road a still-rural setting on the edge of Oxford. More than a simple traffic study, it is a strong period view of the western approach to the city before later widening, heavier traffic and modern roadside development changed the character of the route.
