This 1981 view looks along the A1(M) at Welwyn, with the motorway curving past the slip road for Welwyn and the A1000 while a large blue direction sign points north towards Stevenage. The scene is rich in early-1980s traffic detail, including an orange Ford D-series lorry on the near carriageway and a yellow Rover SD1 further ahead, alongside a mix of vans, saloons and light goods vehicles using both carriageways. Steel central barriers, broad hard shoulders, long dashed lane markings and the sweeping alignment give the road its characteristic modern motorway look, while the cuttings, embankments and sparse spring greenery frame the route in a distinctly semi-rural Hertfordshire setting. More than a simple traffic study, it is a strong period view of the A1(M) in the years when British motorway signing, vehicle design and road engineering all had a very recognisable late-20th-century character.
