This 1981 view looks along the A1(M) at Welwyn, with light traffic spread across the wide motorway as it curves towards the slip road signed for Welwyn, Stevenage and the A1000. The scene includes a good range of early-1980s vehicles, among them two Minis on the opposite carriageway, one red and one green, as well as a Datsun Laurel and a Rolls-Royce carrying an upturned table on its roof, alongside a yellow van and several saloons in the nearer lanes. The central steel barrier, broad hard shoulders, long dashed lane markings and neatly graded embankments give the road its characteristic modern motorway appearance, while the banks, fences, winter trees and open grassland reinforce the semi-rural Hertfordshire setting. More than a simple road scene, it is a strong period view of the A1(M) in the early 1980s, when motorway engineering, traffic mix and direction signing all had a very recognisable late-20th-century look.
