This 1978 view looks along the A1(M) at Welwyn, with fast-moving traffic spread across the wide dual carriageway in a green cutting bordered by trees, banks of spring flowers and open Hertfordshire countryside. A large direction sign on the northbound side points to “The North”, Stevenage and Welwyn via the A1000, while the broad hard shoulders, central steel barrier and gentle sweeping alignment give the motorway a very modern late-1970s appearance. The scene is also rich in period vehicle detail, with a mix of saloons, small family cars and a tipper lorry using the route, helping to fix the photograph firmly in the era of expanding long-distance road travel.
