Great Central No. 506 Butler Henderson, carrying its later British Railways number 62660 on the cabside, seen on the Great Central Railway in 1982 in beautifully turned-out Great Central green. The photograph gives a fine side view of this elegant Robinson 4-4-0, with its tall driving wheels, polished lining, Great Central lettering on the tender, red framing and the nameplate and crest on the splasher all standing out clearly, while maroon coaching stock at the right and steam drifting around the locomotive add to the preserved-line atmosphere. Built at Gorton in 1919 as Great Central Railway No. 506, Butler Henderson was the first of the Improved Director class and is the only surviving Great Central passenger locomotive, making views like this especially important as records of a locomotive that had already become a major preservation star by the early 1980s.
