Battle of Britain Class 34070 Manston at Sellindge in Kent in 1999, photographed out of traffic under protective sheeting with the front end and smokebox door exposed. The view is rich in preservation-era detail, from the tarpaulin lashings and weathered black casing to the red buffer beam, white lamp irons, rough ground and the adjacent locomotive frames beside it. Built at Brighton in November 1947 as 21C170, Manston was the last light Pacific completed under Southern Railway numbering and was withdrawn by British Railways in August 1964. After rescue from Barry scrapyard in June 1983, the locomotive became part of the long-running Southern Locomotives restoration programme, and scenes like this capture it during the years when work was progressing in Kent before its eventual return to steam and later operation in preservation.
