Class 03 diesel shunters 03079 and 03179 at Sandown station on the Isle of Wight in 1990, standing beside the platform with a short rake of engineers’ and wagon stock. The scene is full of late-British Rail detail, including the blue, grey and red departmental-style livery, yellow-and-black warning stripes on the cab ends, the Sandown nameboard at right, the white signal box in the background and the rough ballast and yard surface in the foreground. With both locomotives coupled together and facing the same way, this is a particularly striking Isle of Wight railway scene, capturing the island line in a period when elderly shunters and workaday stock could still be found in everyday use away from the mainland network’s more polished image.
