This dramatic 1966 scene at Pontins Osmington Bay shows an organised poolside display in full swing, with a diver caught mid-air above the outdoor pool as a large crowd watches from the paving and from around the diving structure. The pool edge is marked to 7ft, and beyond the stone boundary wall can be seen the camp’s terraced accommodation climbing the hillside, giving a strong sense of Osmington Bay’s steep coastal setting. Spectators sit shoulder to shoulder in swimwear, summer clothes and deckchairs, while others stand around the diving platform and pool surround, suggesting one of the stunt displays or novelty diving entertainments that formed part of the camp’s daytime programme. The image works especially well as a general view of Pontins pool culture in the 1960s, where the water was not just for swimming but also a stage for organised spectacle.
