This 1965 view at Pontins Dolphin Holiday Camp, Brixham, shows the camp’s main entertainment building, with holidaymakers gathering outside the entrance among rose beds, low stone edging and open forecourt space. The architecture has a more solid, clubhouse-like look than the chalet areas, with tall narrow windows, deep overhanging roofs and a broad entrance canopy, suggesting one of the principal social hubs of the camp. Families and couples are arriving, waiting or sitting in the sunshine, while children, luggage and the general movement around the entrance give the scene a very everyday holiday feel. This part of the Dolphin camp was central to its indoor entertainment life, but the buildings seen here were destroyed by fire in 1991, after which the camp closed for good and the site was later redeveloped for housing.
