This lively 1965 interior at Pontins Dolphin Holiday Camp, Brixham, captures the social side of the holiday-camp experience, with a crowded cabaret or ballroom setting, drinks on the table and a group of young holidaymakers posing for the camera. The foreground table is packed with period detail, including pints, bottled drinks, handled glasses, candles and a brightly patterned tablecloth, while the men’s narrow ties, jackets, knitwear and hairstyles firmly place the scene in the mid-1960s. Around them, the packed room, small tables and closely seated audience suggest one of the camp’s evening entertainments, where singing, drinking and group photographs were all part of the atmosphere. The Dolphin camp at Brixham has long since disappeared, and the site was later cleared for housing, making this a good surviving glimpse of its once busy indoor entertainment life.
