A 1963 view at Butlins Bognor Regis showing one of the camp’s many organised competitions, in this case “The Girl with the Best Cared for Complexion”. The display board has five curtained judging windows, with one contestant visible at the centre, and below it a sign states that the event was presented in conjunction with Butlins by Lux Toilet Soap. Competitions of this kind were once a familiar part of the Butlins holiday-camp programme, reflecting the mixture of staged entertainment, audience participation and sponsor-backed promotions that helped define the classic British camp holiday. Lux regularly sponsored a “best cared for complexion” contest at Butlin’s camps, and the wording seen here matches the long-running competition name used at the time.
