West Country Class 34106 Lydford at Bournemouth in 1956, standing grimy and imposing at buffer stops in a railway yard scene edged with timber posts, concrete blocks, pipework, telegraph poles and low depot buildings. The photograph has a distinctly workaday feel, showing the air-smoothed casing of one of Oliver Bulleid’s Southern light Pacifics in the kind of rough service setting where these engines spent much of their lives rather than on polished publicity shots. Number 34106 was built at Brighton in 1950 and named after the Devon town of Lydford, remaining an unrebuilt member of the West Country class before withdrawal in September 1964 and scrapping later the same year. By the mid-1950s Bournemouth was still an important Southern Region steam centre, and this view captures both the modern look of the locomotive and the soot-blackened reality of everyday steam operation in the town.
