Thundersley stands at Shoeburyness in 1956 during an RCTS railtour, seen in immaculate lined green livery with its name proudly restored on the tank side. The locomotive was one of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway’s handsome 4-4-2 tank engines, originally built in 1909, and by the time this photograph was taken it was nearing the end of its working life under British Railways. Crowds gathered around the engine, the railtour headboard on the smokebox door and the Southend destination plate all help to give the scene the atmosphere of a special-day send-off for a survivor from the old LT&SR system. Thundersley was withdrawn later in 1956 and is notable today as the only LT&SR locomotive to survive into preservation.
