Stirling Single No. 1 on the Great Central Railway in 1982, charging past with a huge plume of exhaust and a rake of maroon coaches behind. The locomotive’s polished brass dome, single large driving wheels, green Great Northern livery and red buffer beam make it instantly recognisable as one of Britain’s most distinctive preserved steam engines, while the telegraph poles, lineside grass and low industrial buildings in the background help place the scene firmly in the preserved railway era rather than the locomotive’s original Victorian working life. No. 1 was the sole survivor of Patrick Stirling’s famous Great Northern Railway 4-2-2 singles, a type introduced from 1870 for high-speed express work, and by the 1980s it was still appearing in steam on special preserved-line visits such as this one at the Great Central Railway.
