South Kensington station in 1976, looking through the station arcade towards the street beyond with a large “TICKETS & TRAINS” sign hanging overhead. The scene is packed with everyday searchable detail, including Abbott Opticians and its “Contact Lenses” sign on the left, a projecting opticians sign with spectacles, the bold “3 MIN HEEL BAR” sign on the right, and the Rippon Boswell notice advertising “heritable and moveable antiques” and “rare oriental rugs”. Through the ornate ironwork at the far end can be seen red London buses passing outside, while the arcade itself retains its decorative late-Victorian character with moulded plasterwork, hanging lamps and shopfronts on either side. The mix of station signage, small businesses and people in mid-1970s dress gives the photograph a strong sense of South Kensington as both Underground station and busy urban shopping passage.
