North Bridge Road, Doncaster in 1958, looking south across the bridge parapet towards the station approaches, carriage sidings and sprawling railway works beyond. The view is filled with converging tracks, standing coaching stock, drifting steam and tall industrial chimneys, capturing Doncaster at a time when the town was still dominated by the railway in almost every direction. In the foreground, two pedestrians on the bridge add a human touch and help convey the scale of the scene, while below them the station throat spreads out into a dense pattern of pointwork and sidings. This is a superb wide view of Doncaster as one of Britain’s great railway centres, showing the close relationship between the station, the yards and the engineering works that made the town such an important part of the steam-era network.
