A 1970s colour photo of a British Rail Class 33 diesel locomotive (D6542, later 33024) idling at a platform in London Waterloo station during the latter half of the 20th century. The scene from 1972 shows the locomotive in its classic rail blue livery with a full yellow warning panel, displaying the double-arrow British Rail logo on its side. In the foreground, passengers with their backs to the camera wait near a station official in a traditional peaked cap, while an overhead destination board lists stops for Basingstoke, Andover, Salisbury, Yeovil, Axminster, and Exeter. This type of locomotive, affectionately known as a “Crompton,” was a common sight on the Southern Region, frequently hauling passenger services to the South West before the widespread electrification of the lines.
